| The Mobile Catering Industry |
Mobile catering is a much maligned industry; it gained a reputation going back many years, of violence (burger or ice cream wars) created by sensationalist TV programmes which gave it a terrible reputation.
The reality is that like any other industry it has its "shadier" characters, but to my knowledge in over 20 years I have never known any acts of unwarranted violence. Yes of course you will likely cause a problem if you go and set up on or next to someone else’s pitch and that’s no different to any business, generally I have found mobile caterers to be the ‘salt of the earth’.
What most people don’t realise is the actual scale of the industry.
In 2008 we did some research and found that the industry as a total in 2007 amounted approx to;
Turnover 680 million
With over 5000 operators
Employing on average 1.8 persons
By the end of 2010 with the recession boosting the industry to an all time high in excess of £760 million
How many other industries have grown throughout the recession?
