NCASS supports the Meal a Day charity Sierra Leone Street Kids project. As well as donating a pound for every member who joins or renews their NCASS membership each year, the Nationwide Caterers Association also ships vital equipment to Sierra Leone.
NCASS first got involved with Meal a Day 10 years ago, when Director Bob Fox became the charity’s “link man” for the West African country.
The Sierra Leone Street Kids project is one of many that Bob takes care of on behalf of Meal a Day. Its aim is to provide food, care and education for runaway, abandoned or trafficked children.
Bob gives his time and expertise free of charge to the charity and goes to Sierra Leone annually to work on projects that help street kids with many aspects of their lives.
Like Bob, all of Meal A Day’s officers and trustees are volunteers, which means that the charity typically delivers 97% of its income directly to its projects.
Bob says, “I originally got involved in the project as I believe that every child deserves to be part of a loving home where they are fed, clothed and have the chance to get an education. No child should be abandoned and left to live on the streets, having to fend for themselves.
“The intention is to concentrate on the younger children that haven’t yet become too indoctrinated into street life, which is often brutal. It’s a fact that the longer they are on the streets, the less likely they are able to adapt to a normal family life.”
