The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has put together new guidance for people who work in or run restaurants offering takeaway or delivery services to help them understand how to work safely during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

BEIS have worked in consultation with a wide range of organisations to create this guidance including firms, unions, industry bodies (including NCASS) and the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and in consultation with Public Health England (PHE) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

This guidance applies to any food preparation or food service setting where food is sold for takeaway or delivery. For example:

  • bars
  • pubs and restaurants operating as takeaways
  • cafes food to go
  • food delivery
  • takeaways and mobile catering
  • contract catering at the point of service to the consumer, such as in offices or similar environments

This also applies to the food services provided by businesses. It does not apply to food preparation or food service in clinical or healthcare settings.

It gives practical considerations of how this can be applied in the workplace and is important to read and take into consideration throughout the planning and delivery of your current or future business plans. The new NCASS guide on trading as a delivery, collection or takeaway compliments this and the new FSA guidance but is specifically written for our, the mobile and independent sector in mind.
