A statement about the use of Gozney Pizza Ovens

NCASS has become aware of the increasing installation of Gozney pizza ovens within commercial catering units, such as mobile vehicles and trailers. This has raised concerns about their suitability in line with the Gas Safety Regulations and current gas safety standards for mobile catering. We have been liaising with Gozney to clarify the suitability of their appliances in this environment and to identify appropriate solutions. Gozney’s official position is set out in the following statement.

To support this statement, we have put together some further explanations and frequently asked Q&As below.

Important Information!

A statement about the use of Gozney Pizza Ovens inside mobile catering vehicles, trailers or other indoor spaces.

Please read this statement if you currently use a Gozney pizza oven or are considering installing one for use in your business.

Q1. Why are Gozney pizza ovens not suitable for indoor use in a commercial catering set up?

A1. Gozney ovens are appliances designed for domestic, outdoor leisure use. The current models are not commercially certified and are not certified for use indoors. This means they should not be installed inside catering vehicles, trailers, or enclosed structures such as gazebos with walls.

These “Outdoor-only” appliances by design require an abundance of free air in excess of what would be naturally available in an enclosed space. This is to remove the products of combustion they create and reduce the risk of flammable gas accumulating, keeping the user safe and healthy during use.

All gas burns with a blue flame when burnt correctly, we call this “complete combustion”. By design pizza ovens in general are tweaked outside of their tolerance to not burn correctly (yellow flame) and with increased flame intensity. For example, large wispy yellow flames. Ordinarily we would call this “incomplete combustion”, hence why these portable pizza ovens are for outdoor use only.

Q2. Can a Gozney oven be adapted for commercial use indoors e.g. can we add ventilation?

A2. Gozney have confirmed that there is currently no suitable adaptation solution available for these pizza ovens in the UK. The attachment of purpose-built flue systems and mechanical extraction systems to enable indoor commercial use is not permitted in the UK as this kind of adaptation does not currently form part of the safety certification/conformity standard for the appliance.

Gozney have advised that they will be releasing their Dome Gen 2 Series shortly which they state will be suitable for indoor commercial use with suitable extraction and ventilation under EN203-1 safety standards. To clarify their suitability for use within your catering unit, you are advised to contact Gozney directly to discuss this further.

Gozney pizza ovens may be suitable for use in gazebos in certain circumstances which include provision for adequate ventilation e.g. all sides of the gazebo removed and a suitable risk assessment on the safe use and positioning must also be in place. Advice should be sought from a suitably qualified and competent Gas Safe Registered LPG engineer.

Q3. Can Gozney pizza ovens be installed by a Gas Safe engineer?

A3. A gas-powered pizza oven for commercial use requires installation and certification by a qualified and competent Gas Safe Registered LPG engineer. To install such an appliance an engineer is duty bound to ensure the oven is suitable for its intended use and should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specifications/standards. In this case Gozney outline in their appliance instruction manual that the appliance is for outdoor use only. See below for extracts from the Gozney instruction manual.

Gozney ovens are supplied with preinstalled manufacturer sealed connectivity parts which form of the appliance certification and conformity standard (CE marking).

For a Gozney oven to be fitted as a commercial installation with the required hose and regulator in line with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (GSIUR) 1998 and the guidance set out in the Code of Practice 33: 2023 and Code of Practice 24 Part 3: 2017, would require manipulation of the manufacturers sealed parts. This would subsequently undermine the current manufacturers safety certification/conformity standards and will void any warranty provided by the manufacturer for the appliance.  In line with GSIUR “Nothing should be done to a gas appliance which will result in it no longer complying with the standard(s) to which it purports to comply, i.e. as required by the conformity (e.g. ‘CE’) marking on the appliance.”

Manipulating the appliance would include fitting adapted flues or extraction systems to the ovens to enable makeshift ventilation.

Accordingly, Gas Safe engineers should not install these ovens indoors, as doing so would conflict with Gas Safety Regulations and could be subject to a formal report to the Gas Safe register.

Q4. What does this mean for current Gozney pizza oven installations?

A4. Please be advised that current installations of Gozney pizza ovens in vehicles, trailers and other indoors spaces are affected.

The Gas Safe Register are directing gas engineers and environmental health officers in terms of how they should respond to existing installations.

Gas engineers should not be issuing gas safety certification for existing installations of an outdoor only appliance in an indoor setting. Instead, they should be providing advice to the owner of the appliance (the Responsible Person) on how to ensure the safe use of the appliance outdoors.

Current installations of Gozney pizza ovens in vehicles, trailers and other indoors spaces are categorised as “At Risk” (AR) by a Gas Engineer owing to the use of an appliance indoors that is designed for outdoor use only. Section 9 Situation 7.9 of the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedures instructs the engineer where permission is obtained remove the appliance to the outdoors. If the engineer is not permitted to make this safe e.g. removing the appliance from the unit to ensure outdoor use only, then this is reportable to the Gas Safe Register and the supplier of the cylinder.

Any subsequent adaptations that have undermined the appliance conformity standards may even be reportable to the local health & safety enforcing authority under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences (RIDDOR). The business may then be subject to enforcement action which could see the appliances prohibited from use, until they can be removed to an outdoor space and made safe.

In addition, the gas engineer who carried out the initial installation may be reported to the Gas Safe Register for further investigation and possible enforcement action. He/she too is reportable under RIDDOR.

Note: Knowingly using an “outdoor only” appliance in an indoor commercial unit may also undermine relevant business insurance policies or prevent the business establishing insurance.

Q5.  If currently using a Gozney pizza oven in an indoor space (Roccbox, Arc, Arc XL, Tread, Dome), what action should be taken?

A5. Although primarily designed for the leisure and home use, Gozney pizza ovens may be used for professionally in certain circumstances.

They may be suitable for use in gazebos in certain circumstances which include provision for adequate ventilation e.g. all sides of the gazebo removed and a suitable risk assessment on the safe use and positioning must also be in place.

Advice should be sought from a suitably qualified and competent Gas Safe Registered LPG engineer to safely and suitably arrange the use of the appliance outdoors.

Our advice would be to immediately refrain from using the ovens in any indoor setting. As soon as reasonably possible arrange for the necessary adaptations to take place to enable outdoor use only.

Please be advised that continued use in an indoor setting may see the business subject to enforcement action by the local authority and may undermine the relevant business insurance policies. You should check with your insurance provider as to whether your insurance cover may be affected.

Q6. If thinking about purchasing a Gozney pizza oven, or other outdoor pizza ovens designed for at-home use, for use in a catering van etc, what should now be considered?

A6. It is vitally important to always check the suitability of an appliance before purchasing and installing. This will save you frustration, time and money later on. For example, refer to the user instruction/installation manual that accompanies the appliance, check the manufacturers website or contact them directly. You are advised to clarify their suitability within the intended set up with your Gas Engineer Partner (GEP).

Q7. What about Gozney’s commercial ovens? (Master, Core, Classic, Napoli, Barbican etc)

A7.Gozney have advised that their commercial range of ovens as listed above are all certified for indoor use with correct installation and ventilation. Gozney have advised that this range is no longer available for sale and customers of these products are not affected.
