Member Spotlight: Bollywood Bites

From childhood memories of Mumbai’s bustling food stalls to building an award-winning mobile catering business, Nisha and Avneet have transformed their passion for authentic Indian cuisine into one of the UK’s most exciting street food brands.

As the founders of Bollywood Bites, they have combined family recipes, professional culinary training, and extensive food industry expertise to bring a fresh, gourmet take on Indian street food to festivals, corporate events, and private celebrations across the country.

Inspired by the vibrant flavours, energy, and accessibility of Mumbai’s street food culture, the duo set out to fill a gap they noticed in the UK market: authentic, high-quality Indian street food that stays true to its roots while delivering a modern customer experience. Today, with multiple industry awards and a growing reputation for exceptional food and service, Bollywood Bites continues to redefine what mobile catering can be.

We caught up with Nisha to discuss their journey, the inspiration behind Bollywood Bites, the challenges of scaling a food business, and their ambitions for the future.

What first made you realise there was a gap in the market for high-quality, authentic Indian street food?

We spent a lot of time exploring some of London’s biggest street food spots places like Ally Pally, Boxpark, and Spitalfields. While we absolutely loved the atmosphere and the overall scene, we noticed an opportunity when it came to the Indian food on offer. Much of what we tasted didn’t quite capture the vibrant, fresh qualities we grew up with, sometimes leaning a bit too oily or lacking that authentic punch. Seeing that gap made us realise there was a massive opportunity to elevate the standard. We wanted to introduce home-made, gourmet Indian street food to the mix and share the truly authentic, fresh flavours we know and love with the UK scene.

When you launched Bollywood Bites, what was the vision you wanted customers to experience beyond just the food itself?

We wanted Bollywood Bites to be a genuinely fun and vibrant business. Our whole ethos is that everyone deserves to ‘spice up their life.’ We didn’t just want to serve great meals; we wanted to make quality street food more accessible and fun, delivering high-grade happiness on a plate, complete with the warmth of great customer service and a little bit of Bollywood flair.

How much has your family heritage and upbringing influenced the flavours and recipes that customers enjoy today?

It’s the absolute foundation of our menu. I (Nisha) grew up in London in a Gujarati family with roots in Africa, so I was exposed to an incredibly rich Indian palate from day one. I learned the art of Indian cooking surrounded by a community that truly celebrates its culinary heritage. When you combine those deeply rooted family flavours with my professional Leiths training and the authentic tastes Avneet experienced living in Delhi, you get the gourmet street food we serve today.

You describe yourself as being inspired by Mumbai street food. What is it about that style of cooking and dining that resonates with you?

I spent many of my childhood holidays in Mumbai visiting family, where I completely fell in love with the incredible street food on offer, especially classics like vada pav, pani puri, and various chaats. We love the accessibility, high energy, and vibrancy of that mobile street food scene, but our true inspiration was to elevate it. We wanted to take those authentic, vibrant experiences and combine them with home-made, gourmet Indian cooking. By doing so, we designed a menu that ensures those consistent, high-quality flavours prevail for our customers each and every time

Your background includes senior roles at Just Eat Takeaway and years spent living in both India and Canada. How has that experience shaped the way you approach the business?

Living in India is what truly taught us what authentic Indian food is. Combining my culinary expertise and passion for food with Avneet’s background at Just Eat and Avneet’s ongoing work as a retained expert consulting in the sector means we approach Bollywood Bites with a very strong grasp of business strategy, pricing, and consumer economics.

Shat were some of the biggest challenges in the early days?

The biggest hurdle was figuring out how to scale up without losing that authentic, ‘home-made’ quality. Transitioning from a passionate idea to a resilient, high-volume operation meant we had to nail our logistics early on. Setting up our primary manufacturing and café unit in Kings Langley was a challenge at first, but it was the absolute key to maintaining our quality control as we grew. It was incredibly important to ensure the quality of the food being served was spot on every single time, regardless of who on the team prepared it.

Alongside that, making sure we were strictly compliant with all regulations was a massive priority from day one, which is exactly what has earned us our consistent 5-star food hygiene rating.

What lessons from the wider food industry have proven most valuable when building Bollywood Bites?

Avneet’s time at Just Eat and advising for KFC UKI really drilled home the importance of logistics, scalability, and compliance. That’s why we operate with a centralised prep kitchen. It ensures we maintain Tier-1 logistical standards and absolute consistency, whether we’re serving 20 people at a private party or 200 people from our VW Crafter at a corporate event.

The mobile food sector has become increasingly competitive. What do you think sets Bollywood Bites apart?

The mobile sector is definitely trending right now, which makes it a really fun and exciting space to operate in. For us, standing out is all about a dual approach: my uncompromising standard for the food, paired with Avneet’s operational strategy. Add in our modern VW Crafter setup and our vibrant Bollywood aesthetic, and we make sure the whole experience is as memorable as our gourmet food.

Have customer expectations around street food changed since you launched the business?

Absolutely. People don’t just want a quick, standard bite anymore; they expect restaurant-quality, healthy, and authentic food, even if they are standing in a field or a business park. We care deeply about hygiene and compliance, which is why my Leiths accreditation and our consistent 5-star food hygiene ratings are so crucial to our success.

How important is customer service to the overall experience, and how do you ensure it remains a core part of the brand as you grow?

Customer service is everything to us. I’m the chief architect of our events, ensuring that the warmth of our service matches the quality of our food. Whether we are catering a corporate lunch or a huge festival, we want every single customer to walk away feeling like they’ve just been handed ‘high-grade happiness on a plate’.

What has been the most memorable event, festival, or booking you’ve catered for so far?

We’ve been incredibly lucky to cater for a huge variety of clients, from corporate HQs like Savers to sports clubs like Wasps Rugby. But honestly, the buzz of a massive crowd at St Dunstan’s College festival, or serving up a huge volume of hungry people for Exponential-E, is hard to beat. It’s high-energy and exactly what we love doing.

What has been the proudest piece of customer feedback you’ve received?

Rather than one specific comment, our proudest validation has been winning the Prestige Award for Food Van of the Year for both 2025/2026 and 2026/2027, as well as the Luxlife awards for Gourmet Indian Street Food in 2025. It’s the ultimate feedback from both our customers and the industry that our home-made, high-quality approach is hitting the mark.

Looking ahead, what are your ambitions for Bollywood Bites over the next few years?

We want to become the UK’s most well-known mobile Indian street food company. With our Kings Langley unit and our award-winning van, we’re perfectly positioned to scale up our corporate and large-event catering while keeping the food accessible, vibrant, and fun.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to launch their own food business today, what would it be?

Nail your operations and compliance from day one. Having a fantastic, passionate product is essential, but building a scalable model and securing solid logistical backing like Avneet has implemented for us is what actually turns great food into a resilient business.

What would you change about the sector if you could?

We’d love to guarantee the British weather! But beyond that, we’d just love to see the sector continue to elevate the reputation of mobile catering, so street food is universally recognised on the exact same level as dining in a great restaurant.

What’s one ingredient you simply couldn’t live without in the kitchen?

For me, the true secret lies in the authentic spice mixes that create our signature flavours. But if I had to narrow it down to just one single ingredient, it would absolutely be garlic. It goes into almost every dish we serve! Not only is it a fantastic antioxidant, but it brings an incredible all-around flavour that really lifts each dish. Plus, as an added bonus, it keeps the vampires away!

Finally, if someone is trying Bollywood Bites for the very first time, what’s the one dish they absolutely have to order?

Our chicken is definitely the most popular choice, whether you go for it in one of our signature wraps or as a hearty Butter Chicken Rice Box. However, since I’m actually a vegetarian, my absolute personal favourite and the one I always highly recommends is the Paneer Wrap.
