Ban on Exclusivity Clauses “Good News” for Sector

The Government have this week announced their decision to widen the ban on exclusivity clauses to include UK workers earning less than £123 a week.

The announcement, made by Business Minister Paul Scully has been met with positive feedback from the hospitality industry; with UK Hospitality claiming the decision “will benefit firms facing ongoing recruitment struggles.”

An estimated 1.5 million workers who are earning £123 per week, or less, now stand to benefit from the reforms; the Government says the move will give workers more flexibility over when and where they work to best suit their personal circumstances.

“While not everyone will want a second job, the reforms will remove red tape that prevents those who want to do so. By giving more workers the option to take on additional work on short hours contracts, the reforms could also help increase businesses’ confidence to create jobs with contracts which suit them,” says Scully.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UK Hospitality is confident that the move could entice people back to the sector – there are currently more than 160,000 vacancies available in the industry: “Pre-pandemic, the industry generated £130bn in economic activity and contributed £39bn of tax to the Exchequer…to full recover…we need to attract and retain good people at all levels. Offering flexibility is a critical part of this.”
