Marcus Rashford overwhelmed by support to feed vulnerable kids

Manchester United and England star Marcus Rashford has said he was “blown away” by the overwhelming support he’s received for his child poverty campaign from cafes and restaurants offering free school meals for children.

The footballer took to Twitter to share dozens of offers put forward by small businesses to supply free meals to struggling families, following the government’s decision to not extend free meal vouchers during upcoming school holidays.

Marcus and his mother Melanie visit food distribution charity FareShare in Manchester this week, tweeting shortly after that he was “blown away by news of local businesses stepping up to fill the voucher scheme deficit during the October half term.

“Selflessness, kindness, togetherness, this is the England I know.” He then went on to retweet requests from cafes, bars and restaurants all over the country who offered their support, in addition to local authorities who announced that they would cover the costs of meal vouchers over the holiday.

Wigan Council has pledged to fund free school meals for 10,500 local children over half term, Birmingham City Council has announced it will fund free school meals for 61k children and many more councils and support groups have pledged to help feed vulnerable children during school holidays.
