Member Spotlight: NannR’s

With over 40 years under her belt working in the hospitality industry, Derbyshire based Ruth Cartlidge took the leap into business ownership in 2024, combining her love of coffee and cake to launch a horsebox bar called NannR’s.

With a year of trading now behind her, we caught up with Ruth to find out more.

Tell us the background behind the name and the concept for the business?

NannR’s name was created in memory of my mum and Nanna Ivy. I have a beautiful granddaughter Margot who calls me NannyRoo, hence NannR’s. My beautifully converted Horsebox is Called “Ivy “ after my Nanna.

The concept embraces everything I love! Coffee, cake, afternoon tea, bar service, cocktails, wine and events – especially weddings !

How did you go about sourcing the best coffee possible?

I was very fortunate to buy and install my Magister coffee machine from Karen and Franco “The Coffee Guy” in Rotherham and he recommended his beautifully roasted coffee beans from Italy . We have so many compliments I haven’t changed a thing!

What do you love most about working in this industry?

Meeting people, living my dream and making memories!

Why do you think it’s so important for people to support their local independents? 

We offer a far more personal service and to be honest the care and passion we put into the service we give is fantastic. We need all types of businesses to survive.

Favourite coffee to drink?

Simple – Americano

What’s your advice to those starting up?

Do your research- look at the market and competition- try and be unique! Live your dream and go for it!

Why did you join NCASS?

Because I love cakes and baking, I would love to meet Mary Berry.

Where do you draw inspiration from? 

My friends, my family and my customers – because I pride myself in offering a bespoke service, I will do my upmost to deliver for my customers.

France. I love the climate, the way of life and the beaches!
