Breaking News: PM’s statement on Christmas

The Prime Minster Boris Johnson today (16.12.20) gave an update to the country regarding the relaxation of Covid-19 rules over the Christmas period.

After calls from members of Parliament to tighten the restrictions over the festive break, the PM reiterated the current rules, saying that the latest adjustments to tiers in various areas will be announced tomorrow (17.12.20) by Matt Hancock.

Johnson spoke of the “worrying rises in some parts of the country including Kent and London, in which the government “acted quickly to move the capital into Tier 3.

Wales, he announced, will be going into full lockdown from 28th December and Scotland is introducing tighter restrictions.

Caution should be upheld regarding Christmas gatherings and people should “think hard and in detail about the days ahead and whether you can do more to protect yourself and others.”

Three households can still meet over a period of five days during the Christmas break, but that is a “maximum,” with the safest limit advised to be as low as possible.

The PM also issued advice to citizens in the lead up to the main Christmas week, saying that from this Friday (18.12.20), people should “reduce the amount of people they’re in contact with as much as possible, avoid travelling between tiered areas and staying away from home.” Rules in your local area should be fully adhered to.

Johnson rounded up his message to the nation by saying that “have yourselves a Merry Little Christmas and I do mean this year…little.”

We will provide more information on Covid-19 restrictions in all parts of the UK as soon as more news is announced from government.
