Meet The Team: Liam

Here at NCASS, there’s a passionate team working behind the scenes every day to make sure members get the most out of their membership – and we thought it was about time you got to know them!

Next up is our Graphic Designer Liam Murphy. With 15 years of experience spanning agency, publishing and education sectors, Liam brings a wealth of creative expertise to the marketing team.

What do you enjoy most about being a graphic designer?

Mainly the convenience of it. I’ve worked as a designer for 15 or so years, and it’s still something I love doing. As a kid, I liked ripping up football magazines and old bits of paper and sellotaping them together into weird collages. I grew up in the ‘90s where digital design really took off, and my parents bought a computer that I spent hours on playing around in photoshop and MS paint, not realising that it could eventually become a career. I feel blessed that I’ve been able to make it my livelihood.

When I finish work, I am happy to go home and work on designs or develop skills and ideas that I’ve had during the day. Design is fun and my enthusiasm never goes away.

What’s been your favourite project you’ve worked on at NCASS so far?

The one that stands out is we created a guide on starting a pizza business. As it was only my fifth month into working at NCASS, it was the first project I did that I really felt like I had the confidence to take ownership of it. It’s a great guide that you can download here.

How does your work on the marketing team help NCASS members?

By creating an invisible relationship – providing assets and visual communications that inform and inspire members but don’t impede on the day to day of running their own business. I’m still conscious that we need to have an immediate impact when members see what we are producing, so I think about what we can do different to keep things interesting but also keeping within the NCASS identity.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs

A hobby of mine is to find digital scans of old magazines, and I generally stick to what it was that made me want to be a designer in the first place. I followed trends for years, but then I had some advice where I was told if I do that, everything I do will look the same as everyone else’s work. That’s also the advice I’d give to NCASS members – to do their own thing and not worry about what others are doing.

What’s the most creative food truck, market stall or café branding you’ve come across?

Recently, I was on holiday in Stockholm, and there’s a gelato shop called Kenny’s Gelato. Outside there’s a big TV screen of Kenny himself hyping it up. They also had some interesting flavours like violet, cinnamon bun and even one called Elvis Presley, which I still don’t really know what was in it.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

My absolute go to is Weetabix with a bit of Tate & Lyle sugar on top.

What would you name your food truck or hospitality business?

I’d have a Britney Spears-themed burger truck called Grill Me Baby One More Time

Fun Fact about you

I’m a big fan of extreme metal music!
