New guidance for restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaway services

UK government update for hospitality

The government has published new guidance for people who work in or run restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes or takeaways.

The main points are:

  • Priority actions to take
  • Thinking about risk
  • Keeping customers and visitors safe
  • Who should go to work and social distancing for workers
  • Cleaning the workplace
  • Workforce management and more

The seven steps to protecting yourself, your staff and your customers during coronavirus, include:

  1. Complete a COVID-19 risk assessment. If you’re an NCASS member, you can do so by downloading a risk assessment template.
  2. Increase how often you clean work surfaces and ensure staff and customers are washing their hands frequently and using hand sanitiser.
  3. Enforcing the wearing of face coverings for staff and customers – unless an individual is exempt from wearing one (read more).
  4. Make sure everyone visiting or working in your premises is social distancing and following a one-way system.
  5. Increase ventilation by keeping doors and windows open wherever possible and running ventilation systems.
  6. Take part in NHS Test and Trace by keeping a record of all your customers for 21 days.
  7. Turn away people with coronavirus symptoms, including staff members with a persistent cough, high temperature or a loss of taste or smell.
