Liz Truss delivered her first conference speech as Prime Minister earlier today at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.

She was quick to recap what has been implemented over the past few weeks, but did not announce any new policies. She outlined a determination to ‘get Britain moving’ by instigating growth within the economy.

Against the backdrop of the energy crisis, she reaffirms the action this government has taken to ensure ‘typical household energy bills shouldn’t exceed £2,500 per annum.’ Immediate action has also been promised to defend businesses over the winter.

Truss insisted that she has ‘three priorities; growth, growth and growth’. Following on from the Government’s Growth Plan announced on 22nd September, she outlines that while not everyone is a fan of change, it is for the better and we’re on a ‘difficult but necessary mission’ to achieve this growth. The measures already announced to accomplish this are:

• We have already cut stamp duty, help people on the ladder
• Raising the stamp duty threshold from £300,000 to £425,000
• Reversing the 1.25% rise in National Insurance contributions
• Cancelling corporation tax increases
• Cutting income tax to 19% in April 2023

Liz Truss admits also that the abolition of the 45p tax rate became a distraction, that she ‘gets it and has listened’ so the Government is now no longer proceeding with it.
