Free Website Audit Template: A Simple Checklist for Hospitality Websites

You don’t need a brand-new website to get more bookings. You simply need to know what’s working, what isn’t, and what to fix first.

This free website audit template is designed specifically for independent cafés, pubs and restaurants. It’s a clear action plan that will help you review your website from a customer’s point of view and spot the things that most often stop browsers turning into bookings.

So let’s get started.

How to Use the Audit Checklist

  • Open your website on your phone and a laptop
  • Pretend you’ve never visited before
  • Answer each question with a simple Yes / No / Not sure
  • Don’t try to fix things yet – just note what stands out

The aim isn’t perfection. It’s clarity and priorities.

Core Information Checklist

If visitors can’t find these quickly, many will leave.

  • Your business name is clear on the homepage
  • Your location (town / area) is obvious
  • Opening times are easy to find and up to date
  • Contact details are correct and consistent
  • Booking or enquiry options are visible without scrolling
  • There’s no conflicting or outdated information

If anything here is missing or hard to find, fix this first.

Menu Checklist
  • Your menu often makes or breaks the decision to book.

    • Menus are easy to find from the homepage
    • Menus load quickly on mobile
    • Text is readable without zooming
    • Prices are clear
    • Menus are current (no old dates or unavailable items)
    • PDFs are easy to open (or menus are built into the page)
    • The way you describe your food makes people hungry

Ask yourself: Would I feel confident booking after reading this menu? Does your menu make people want to book?

Most guests will view your site on their phone.

  • Pages load quickly on mobile
  • Buttons are easy to tap
  • Text isn’t too small
  • Nothing overlaps or breaks the layout
  • Booking works smoothly on mobile
  • Pop-ups don’t block the screen

If the site feels awkward on your phone, it will for guests too.

You don’t need to understand how these work, you just need to make sure they’re in place.

  • Website loads in a few seconds
  • Pages don’t show errors or broken links
  • The site uses HTTPS (secure padlock in the browser)
  • Images don’t feel unnecessarily large or slow
  • Booking links actually work

Slow or broken websites quietly lose bookings. Arrange a review with your web designer or agency to make sure these technical issues are addressed.

This is about being visible when people search locally.

  • Your town/area appears naturally on key pages
  • Your address matches what’s shown elsewhere online
  • There’s a clear location page or footer info
  • Directions or map links are easy to access
  • Your website supports “near me” searches

Your website and your Google listing should support each other.

  • Google Business Profile is claimed and verified
  • Name, address and phone number match your website
  • Opening times are correct
  • Website link works and points to the right page
  • Menus are linked or uploaded
  • Photos are recent and relevant

Many guests see your GBP before your website so getting it right is of paramount importance.

Once someone is interested, is the next step obvious?

  • Clear “Book a Table” or “Reserve Now” buttons
  • Calls to action appear on key pages
  • Booking doesn’t require unnecessary steps
  • Contact options are clear for enquiries
  • No confusion about what to do next

If guests have to think, many won’t act.

Once you’ve completed the audit, group your findings into three lists:

  1. Fix immediately – broken links, missing info, outdated menus
  2. Improve next – clarity, mobile usability, speed
  3. Nice to have – design tweaks, extra content, enhancements

This turns the checklist into a clear, prioritised plan, not an overwhelming to-do list.

Why This Works

This audit brings everything in this series together into one practical tool. It helps you:

  • See your website the way guests do
  • Focus on changes that affect bookings
  • Make confident improvements without technical overwhelm

Small fixes in the right places often lead to real increases in enquiries and bookings.
